Friday the 13th has long been surrounded by superstition. For centuries, black cats have unfairly been caught up in those myths, linked to bad luck, mystery, and spooky stories. But the truth is much sweeter. Black cats are just like every other cat: curious, affectionate, playful, and ready to bring joy to the people who welcome them home.

Today, we’re setting the record straight by celebrating black cats and waiving adoption fees* for all our black cats looking for loving homes! Here are some interesting black cat facts to set the mood:

  • Sailors historically believed a black cat aboard a ship ensured a safe journey and brought good luck.
  • Ancient Egyptians associated black cats with the goddess Bastet, believing they brought protection and good luck.
  • In Japanese folklore, black cats are believed to bring prosperity, ensure good harvests, and bless marriages.
  • In Scottish folklore, a strange black cat arriving at your home signifies incoming prosperity.
  • In Welsh folklore, black cats are believed to have the power to keep a household free from sickness and fever.
  • The world’s richest cat was a black cat named “Blackie,” who inherited $12.5 million from his owner’s will.

*Some exclusions may apply. Standard adoption criteria applies. Does not include ESA adoptions.

Adoption Fees

Adoption fees are always waived for U.S. military Veterans.

Select animals have their adoption fees sponsored by generous admirers. Interested in sponsoring a shelter animal? Your tax-deducible donation can cover the adoption fee of a shelter pet and give a family an extra incentive to adopt them.

What is Included?

All animals are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations, microchipped, de-wormed, and given flea/tick preventative. Animals are sent home with a welcome home supply of Purina food. Dogs 6 months and older are tested for heartworm, and all dogs are started on heartworm preventative.
